Friend Laura organized an informal bookclub in early 2000 which we thoroughly enjoy. Meetings are about once a month at members homes or at a resturant or coffee shop. At meetings, besides eating, visiting, and discussing the book, we also add book titles that members suggest to the can, then randomly select the next book. (We do this two months ahead of time.) The person who submitted the title selected, does any background research and attempts to lead the discussion for that book Typically whoever is hosting provides dinner, but drinks and a light snack is fine. Sometimes the food follows the theme of the book. There are no rules, except to let the other members know the plan ahead of time, so they know whether to eat first.
Here are some photos taken at our gatherings. The left most photo is from Sept 2010. In the next photo (2006), Laura is wearing her "Boston" T-shirt because we were reading The Dark Tide about the great molasses flood in Boston. The following photo (2004) is from Bel Canto; we occasionally (rarely) dress to match the book. The photo on the far right (2003) was taken at the Barnes and Noble coffee shop.
